We follow the NCETM Mastering Number approach in Reception. This helps us to build secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children, developing children's fluency and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.
As well as this, we also teach the children about Shape, Space and Measure, building up their understanding of concepts such as pattern, properties of shapes and measurement.
Autumn 1
This half term the children will learn about subitising (knowing how many there are just by looking at them!) to 3. They will subitise amounts of objects and sounds. They will focus on counting skills - counting in order, one at a time. This can be tricky at first so let them have a go counting sets of objects at home, for example a row of buttons or small toy cars.
The children will learn about how all numbers are made up of 1's and they will explore the composition of numbers 3 and 4. They will also learn to compare sets 'just by looking', using 'more than' and 'fewer than' to explain what they see e.g. 'Teddy has more sweets than dog'.
