We follow the NCETM Mastering Number approach in Reception. This helps us to build secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children, developing children's fluency and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.
As well as this, we also teach the children about Shape, Space and Measure, building up their understanding of concepts such as pattern, properties of shapes and measurement.
Spring 1
This half term the children will continue to develop their subitising skills, subitising die patterns within five. They will focus on matching numerals to quantities to five, and will understand that each number is one more than the previous number.
The children will continue to develop their understanding of the composition of numbers to 7. They will use the language 'more than', 'fewer than', and 'equal to' to compare sets.
In Shape, Space, and Measure lessons, the children will learn to compare and distinguish between 2D and 3D shapes. They will explore measuring weight, length, and height, using a range of concrete resources in class. They will also learn about sequencing events, creating their own simple timetables of their school day.
